TIDAL is joining the growing number of music streaming platforms introducing measures to identify AI-generated music and prevent it from generating royalties—provided the tracks can actually be detected as AI-generated.
TIDAL is the latest streaming service to address the rapid rise of AI-created music. Unlike some competitors, however, the music streaming platform will not automatically remove AI-generated tracks. Instead, identified content will be clearly labelled, while uploaders will no longer be able to earn revenue from those recordings.
Tracks found to contain copied or plagiarised material will still be removed entirely. According to TIDAL, this approach allows listeners to retain the freedom to choose what they want to hear while discouraging the monetisation of AI-generated content.
One potential drawback is that the detection process itself relies on AI. As AI-generated music continues to improve, it remains to be seen how reliably these systems will distinguish between human and machine-created recordings. The day may not be far off when neither detection software nor the human ear can consistently tell the difference.
