Google’s Chromecast streaming dongle goes with its pension, it’ll be replaced with the brand new – albeit more expensive – Google TV Streamer.

The affordable Google Chromecast with Google TV has reached the end of its life cycle after 13 years of service. Google has decided it’s time for an upgrade, introducing its brand new TV Streamer. Priced at $99.99 (€119), this new device is touted to be considerably more advanced. Unlike the dongle design of its predecessor, the Google TV Streamer is a full-featured streaming box that Google encourages users to display rather than hide behind their TV. It also comes equipped with a physical ethernet port, enhancing the stability of network connections.

Enhanced Performance and Features

The remote control has been revamped for improved user experience, and Google claims their TV Streamer offers a significant leap in performance. It features a faster processor (SoC), double the RAM compared to its predecessor, and 32 GB of storage. Running on Google TV OS, it supports apps from all major streaming services. For enthusiasts, it also supports HDR and Dolby Atmos. Although for the latter, an Atmos-capable surround system or soundbar is required to fully utilize this feature. Additionally, the device includes Google Gemini AI, which can assist in recommending content tailored to your tastes.

The TV Streamer is set to launch on September 24 in the US and the Netherlands. Release dates for other regions have yet to be announced.
