The price of Microsoft’s Xbox consoles, related hardware, and games is rising significantly, the company has announced. And while this may come as no surprise, the scale is striking.
As reported for example here, Xbox consoles will become noticeably more expensive — by anywhere from a few dozen dollars to $100, depending on the model. Microsoft also warns that availability of the Xbox Series S and X may become irregular or limited. Accessories such as controllers and headsets are also going up in price. Most notably, game prices will be climbing sharply, with some titles expected to cost as much as $80 more during the holiday season.
Microsoft attributes these changes to “market conditions and increasing development costs.” Affected regions include the United States, the EU, the UK, and Australia, although exact new prices for these markets have not yet been disclosed.
Of Course Tariffs
It’s important to note that Microsoft’s Xbox consoles — including most of their components — are produced in China. As such, U.S. tariffs, largely driven by former President Donald Trump’s trade policy, are having a wide-reaching effect. These additional costs are now being passed along the chain. And ultimately, it’s always the consumer who ends up footing the bill.
The Audio Industry Connection
Consequences of tariffs are aren’t limited to gaming (obviously…). The high-end audio and hi-fi market is also beginning to feel the pinch, with more manufacturers facing price hikes due to rising import costs. If you’re planning a major equipment purchase this year, it may be wise not to delay. Postponing could mean paying significantly more — or waiting much longer — for the product you want.
