VPRO On Stage episode one: Barry Hay

It’s time again for a new season of VPRO On Stage, the Dutch music program that focuses on one special guest from the music world each time.

Which new band should we all hear according to Barry Hay? What is S10’s playlist? Which legends does Wiwa invite? Who are Naaz’s musical allies? Which young, promising artists is Ilse de Lange bringing? And what, according to Spinvis, is the connection between music and poetry? In On Stage, presenter Nadia Moussaid and a main guest throw the doors of TivoliVredenburg wide open to welcome Dutch musicians and artists. The first main guest is Barry Hay from world famous band Golden Earring.

Barry Hay

In the first broadcast of the new series On Stage, Barry Hay is the main guest. He sang for decades in Holland’s biggest rock band, Golden Earring, and is still one of our country’s best-known musicians. Partly due to the illness of guitarist George Kooymans, the Earring disbanded, but Barry still has more than enough friends to make music with. In On Stage, he performs with an occasional band including JB Meijers and Danny Vera and performs the Golden Earring classic “Back Home” with Di-rect. Di-rect and Vera also perform their own new music. Barry Hay has invited the rough, Hague-based Wodan Boys and the Mariachi Tierra Caliente band too. Finally, there is exciting disco by Gintronix.

Ode to The Hague

Barry Hay describes his episode of On Stage as an ode to The Hague, the rock capital of the Netherlands. ‘That’s because of the Indian boys. In the early days. They could all play well. In the sixties we all pulled ourselves up by that. At one point you had about five hundred bands in town. And everyone wanted to be better than the other. You stimulate each other enormously. And that still reverberates.
